Our history, like that of so many Midwestern communities, is tied to the migration of settlers on their westward journey. Named for the springs used as watering holes for wagon trains, the community of Blue Springs was organized as part of Jackson County in 1827 and became the fourth settlement in the county, pre-dating Kansas City.

Blue Springs' location provides the perfect opportunity to take advantage of both local and metropolitan cultural and entertainment events. Almost every day brings some type of community event or concert to the Blue Springs area. Cultural attractions include the Nelson-Atkins Museum and Gallery, the Kansas City Symphony, the State Ballet of Missouri and local art shows and craft fairs.

Burr Oak Woods Nature Center - Located one mile north of I-70 on Missouri 7 Highway, the Missouri Department of Conservation operates this area which includes a 15,000 square foot nature center and 1,071 acres of prairies, glades, forest, ponds and streams. Five hiking trails allow you to enjoy these diverse habitats. Also available are picnic areas. A 3,000-gallon aquarium in the Nature Center is stocked with native Missouri fishes, reptiles and amphibians. There is also children's area and a Night Gallery, which add to the unique atmosphere of the Center.

Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest - This fall festival spans two weeks in September. The festival traditionally begins with the Barbecue Blaze-Off at Baumgardner Park, 2401 Ashton Drive. The next weekend, downtown Blue Springs is taken over by more than 200 craft and food booths. A parade is the weekend's highlight.

Blue Springs offers a tremendous parks system encompassing 14 parks and over 300 acres. Lighted baseball, softball and tennis courts are available with playground equipment, shelter houses and restroom facilities nearby. The Centennial Pool-Plex, a two pool complex with a removable roof for year-round swimming, is open to the public for instruction, lap swimming and all types of water fun. The Parks and Recreation Department handles all reservations for the parks and offers picnic kits with sporting equipment to help make your outing even more special. Blue Springs BMX track is located in Pink Hill Park and has full competition tournaments.

Additionally, the Jackson County Parks system, including Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake, adds another 3,000 acres of park land to our area. Both lakes have full-service marines, swimming beaches and shelter house facilities. Campsites are also available.
